He was an old and weathered officer
Whose day had come and gone.
Not as young as once he was,
but still, he lingered on.
His once strong body … tamed by age.
His hair now turning gray.
His scars … a grim reminder
of his feats of yesterday.

There was a time … long years ago,
when he stood straight and tall.
When trouble came, they called his name.
Then, he could do it all.
In all his years of wearing blue
he never backed away.
He thrived on danger … stared it down!
But, that was yesterday.

His mind still wanders to the past
where the long blue line began.
Down through the years … he counts the tears
shed for each fallen man.
Some were friends he can’t forget.
Each wore the badge with pride.
A few good men … who failed to win.
By the shield … each lived and died.

He sees the new breed fill each place
vacated by old friends.
Dressed all in blue … they start anew
the job that never ends.
He ponders how they will react
when danger calls their name.
They’ll pay their dues …
young blood renews …
but the badge remains the same!

The final roll-call has been reached.
The new must have their day.
His watch now ends.
Their watch begins.
The old breed fades away!

Dedicated to the best police officer I‘ve ever known. My
partner, friend, and brother in arms

This is the loftiest tribute to a "comrade in arms" I ever read. A heart-and gut-wrenching paean.
Only your pen can pay tribute like this that tells of the tremendous daily challenge of your brethren in Blue.
Magnificent!
Elizabeth.

the old will never fade because the memories of what they did will live on. They never really go away because even after age steals it away what we our lives on inside ourselves. good write jen
