Array ( [sid] => 88773 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Dad [time] => 2005-03-25 22:53:17 [hometext] => [bodytext] => When I scraped my knee, he was there. When I fell off my bike, he was there. When I had a nightmare, he was there. When I was frightened by the smallest of spiders, he was there. He was my hero. My father was many things, but most of all, he was a happy man and a wonderful father. He always came through the door after many hours of work with a smile on his face, just being happy to be home with his family. He loved my mother with his whole heart, and my brother and I are the product of their love. When I was about five years old, my mother and brother and I wanted a pool in our yard. My parents put every penny they had into buying our beautiful home so a swimming pool seemed out of the question. Mom told me that if I sat on Daddy’s lap and asked him very sweetly for a pool, that he couldn’t refuse me. Well, sure enough, we had the biggest pool that would fit in our yard a few weeks later. My father was the hardest working man. He would do anything for his family. He allowed me to take in any stray animal that needed a home, because he knew it would make me happy. He sacrificed so much for his family as well as his country. I am so proud of my father being a veteran and having survived the Korean War as a United States Marine. His home always and still flies the flag of our United States and the Marine Corps. Flag with much pride. My father was awarded a “Medal of Honor” for his part in the Korean War. And my father could not have been any prouder when my brother, Glenn, enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He had a beautiful son that chose to follow in his footsteps! The pride my father felt for his son is beyond words. My father was also a great dancer. He and my mom used to dance the “Lindy” and other dances during the days when guys and girls used to dance together. I thank my father and mother for giving me the gift of dance. My father also shared his love of music with me and taught me to appreciate all different styles. However, the truest memories of my father that stick in my head are the simple ones. Dad and I used to walk our dog Prince, down to the beach and on the way home we would pick Orange lilies growing wild in the beach grass. He and I would pick the beautiful orange lilies and bring them home to my mother. To this day I remember my father and I picking the flowers, it was special to us. And Dad, because I know you can still hear me now…. I promise to always pick these flowers and bring them to my mother, your beautiful wife. There will never be anyone that loved me the way that my father did! And there never will be anyone that I love more than him. And lastly, I want to thank my father for teaching me the value of a smile. Kindness and a big smile goes a long way. His smile will always be in my memory. Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
