When Slide thought his magik was slipping away
He did the only thing he knew how to do
When it feels like you’re losin’ your power
You seek someone with more power than you
So just outside of Baton Rouge
He heard there was a woman there
Everyone warned him not to go
But Slide you see, he just didn’t care

Heaven Help Me – Hell No
________________________________

She got
long dark hair
and blacker eyes
hiding her evil soul

Can’t let
her get her
hands on you,
she’ll never let you go

She cast
spells of love
and spells of hate
but the ones that she do best

Is when
she sends a
soul to hell and
she never lets it rest

She’s an agent of the Devil
She got no remorse
For anything she done
She sent my daddy down to meet him
And I just found out
I might be her son
Heaven help me – Hell no

I went
to see her
when my music
seemed to lose its power

Mojo
crystal balls
incantations
with rare powdered flower

Mem’ries
flooded back
some images
of long forgotten days

She said
I know you
I’ve been hoping
maybe you’d share his fate

She’s an agent of the Devil
She got no remorse
For anything she done
She sent my daddy down to meet him
And I just found out
I might be her son
Heaven help me – Hell no

I told her I don’t want to go
I hit the door and I hit the road
I can still feel her getting close
Oh, Heaven help me ~
Heaven help me – Hell no

She’s an agent of the Devil
She got no remorse
For anything she done
She sent my daddy down to meet him
And I just found out
I was born her son

Heaven help me – Hell no
Heaven help me – Hell no
Heaven help me – Hell no
________________________________
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She stopped his heart and sold his soul
But she didn’t count on the control
Or the strength of the magik weaved into the music
That wasn’t ready to let him go
So he ran for the House of the Rising Sun
Hoping he could find some solace there
But they only catered to those who are living
And Slide, he didn’t have him a prayer
This one is why I wanted to work with you,
you're a great story-teller in your songs.
For me , this is one of the highlights of the series,
and I like to think of the "Heaven help me--
hell no" refrain as getting very gospel.
It's exciting.
You done gave me the chibbers, lol. These really are great writes. I want the record. How do you keep coming up with such amazing tales of Slide? Your descriptions and songs seem as if you actually know the man. It is kind of eary but very entertaining. Loves it!!!!
I'm dying to know........ did everyone see it, see her, too?
The only thing - ONLY thing - that could make this series better is if we could hear Gee read the poetic intro/afterword and hear Nazzy sing the lyrics. THAT would be entirely fabulous.
(who very nearly put something rather inappropriate up there to describe how much she'd enjoy that *wink*)
