Array ( [sid] => 87170 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Crossing the Sea to Swim [time] => 2005-03-11 10:41:25 [hometext] => Standing at the edge of a great sea, a man looks far out to the horizon. All is beautiful before him, yet his imagination fixes on a spot just beyond the point he can see. He exclaims to himself: Now, that would be a nice place to swim! [bodytext] => Our skins are more honest
in disseminating our uniqueness
than our brains may ever be:
our flesh, when lain exposed
and accountable,
which crawls and sweats,
makes us itch,
and betrays our inside-outness
through ignoble display
of the scars which mark us;
and so, I close my eyes inside my skin,
my welted flesh, my only home--
and with my arms outstretched,
(like Adam's) in effigy,
I am my own cross,
and I am the cross I bear
as I cross the sea to swim
in the intellect's dubious tide.

I like this. Excellent expression, and a thought-provoking subject. Methinks I shall read it again in future.

well done.

How wonderfully said. I thought this whole piece expressed such truth, even in your teaser at the start. Thought provoking, and certainly one to savor.

Thanks for this -
mj

"my welted flesh, my only home--"

Indeed. Worth another read, for sure.

Yep, works for me. The skin I'm in reflects my sins, my sacrifices and betrayals, but your's is a much more eloquent analysis of mind and body and its complex interface, the honesty of the physical and the masks of the mind.
