Writing verses on the wall
In his guarded anonimity
Never signed the words at all

But it wasn't poetry or art
Someone with a witty heart
With a marker did campaign
While a soldier went insane

There were times the mortars fell
To remind you it was hell
Soldiers died in that latrine
Soldiers who would never dream

Women soldiers, history
Through the wire screen I see
Swatting flies, can it be
Reading *****house poetry

There's no armor on the walls
Halliburton builds the stalls
Soldiers die in those latrines

Amid the shouting voices from all sides of the political spectrum, the voices most deserving yet least-heard are those of our forces assigned to carry out U.S. policy. The poem lends dignity to their plight--although most understand the dangers in their position, and are prepared for them (insofar as anyone can be prepared for something as barbaric and inhuman as a war zone).

Though the poem makes its politics known, it doesn't beat its readers over the head with ideology. Much can be accomplished in this way. Instead of saying, "Bush is a warmonger who spills the blood of innocents," you make it not so much about Bush at all--but the soldiers. By setting the piece within the confines of the ultimate equalizer (a latrine), you make their sacrifices all the more painful. You are due much credit for this.

Interestingly, your style reminds me of a volume of World War I British poets I have on my bookshelf. It's always remarkable, for the student of history, to find how little the problems of our world have changed in the last 100 years (or 1000, for that matter). Thank you for your perspective, as well as for the moving portrait which exists as its creative result. Sincerely,

-KAC-
