Where demons and predators are allowed to reside
Fear of the dark, always a mystery to me
What I cannot see turns into a scarey fantasy
Where it comes from I cannot decide

Whenever it is too dark to see
I assume an evil force is lurking after me
Within the catacombs of my mind
I conjure up a horrible fate,
Leading to my demise

I shiver with chills and Goosebumps
Running the length of my spine
Hair stands up on the back of my neck
I anticipate being attacked at any time
As the evil lies in wait to pounce unrepentantly

As most of my encounters in the dark are fearful
All of my fantasies are mysterious and sinister
Where someone is trying to cause me harm
Even in our own basement fear takes flight
Hovering above or behind me ready to pounce at night

From where this fear emanates God only knows
Perhaps a childhood state, where all rationality goes
My adult mind cannot calibrate the reasonable
So it's hard to muster an attitude that only good is feasible
And I have failed to conquer the fear

One major difficulty I find
Is all the media attention to this problem area, and crime
All the dark in our culture
People killing each other and dismembering them
Only reinforces this fear of a horrible end [comments] => 6 [counter] => 158 [topic] => 13 [informant] => Willofree [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 13 [ratings] => 3 [editpoem] => 0 [associated] => [topicname] => DarkPoetry )

Wow Terry that was an awesome write, different than your usual. I used to be extremely afraid of the dark as a child and teenager. My Mother told me once, the same things are in the dark that you see in the light. Much peace to you my friend.

" ... My adult mind cannot calibrate the reasonable ... "

I believe much is said in that one statement alone Terry. With your background I would think that you might have the benefit of training to see past certain things and situations ... but then again ... I could accept that perhaps there are the the fears of other minds that have worn on you, and pushed the depths of darkness ... maybe both. But to fully understand ones self, we have to peer behind those doors ... travel the dusty corridors of our minds and seek the inner fears our conciousness holds at bay. I really appreciated reading this one. It shows additional effort to travel with your pen into areas you had yet to explore. Well done Sir, well done.
