caged from birth,
trained to do tricks
so that I can get an A in lab,
I envy you.

As I reach into the Skinner Box
to pick you up,
you squeak the squeak
passed down through generations,
the natural reaction
to a python, a cat, or a lab student.

I envy you
because you don’t know why you cry out,
you just do.

You don’t care if my hand
is the hand of God
or if my python lips
are waiting to take you in
and lead you to the hereafter.

I’ve spent my life seeking God,
trying to grab the hand that will take me to Truth.
But, knowing the price of that knowledge,
if I ever get close to being picked up
to be led from this world,
I squeak too and try my damnedest
to hold on.

Later, I regret my lost opportunity
to claim Truth and Knowledge
and seize, for one last mortal instant
what I’ve spent my life chasing.

You don’t know the price you’ll pay one day,
nor the taste of earthly wisdom
that drives the lives of all men.

You don’t know Poetry,
and I envy you. [comments] => 4 [counter] => 205 [topic] => 21 [informant] => butterat_zool [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 5 [ratings] => 1 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => Lifepoems )
