By Chris Johnston, Times Online - 18 February 2005

As many as 30 people are believed to have died in an suicide bombing during Friday prayers at a Shia mosque in Baghdad today.

A further 22 people have been wounded, although that total is expected to rise.

The blast occurred in the Dora neighborhood near the al-Khadimain mosque, but other details of the explosion remain unclear.

Shias are celebrating the Islamic holy month of Muharram. Tomorrow is Ashoura, the 10th day of Muharram and the holiest day of the year for them. The day marks the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad, in a 7th century battle for leadership of the Islamic world.

More ugly madness in Baghdad
Thirty dead in a mosque
Is the mayhem never ending?
Who will count the cost?

What a Pandora’s Box has been opened
Never it seems to close
When you meddle in foreign lands
It’s the people there who lose

Iraq is torn in pieces
Broken like an incinerated doll
In this state of anarchy
No one can win at all

We must hope those dumb architects
The ones who “planned” this thing
Will realise the full true cost
Of their Neo Con fling

The times are gone for lies
Those brutal lies they told
It is now time for statesmen
As we had in times of old

Compare the present bunch
With JFK or Eisenhower
Where are the giants we need
Now in our gravest hour?

As thirty die from a brutal hand
Think well on what we do
This short-sighted folly of our time
Came from a brainless few

They talked of a cakewalk
A stroll in the sand
We need broader minds so dearly now
To weigh and understand

Not a bunch of knee-jerk dogs
Who rave and spread their hate
The Iraqi people now need MUCH MUCH more
To now escape this fate
