The twin steeples reaching up
I remember that day
Remember it well
Sugar bag lunches of peanutbutter and jelly
Trading Oreos for a Fig Neuten
Sisters with crosses hanging on their bellies
Long brown tables and paper wads
setting across from you
Looking at your curly locks
Later on the cement play ground
Chewing Fleers and Double Bubble
blowing bubbles huge and round
setting down
Giggles and a gummy face
Baseball cards of Williams and Baby who
A ribbon in your hair a pretty lace
Seventh graders are too young
Unable to understand feelings of love
Skiprope tag and chewing gum
Ringlets bouncing in the air
Rosy red cheeks
Lips still bare
The main altar with it's twin spirals
Grade schoolers walking to church
from the school
Sisters warning No one smile
Front row pews reserved for seventh graders
Still out front a dark black hearse
Bubble gum love doesn't matter
One is gone the other shattered
Sisters sternly saying no chatter
A choir sings How Great Thou Art
The priest at the center of the aisle
They wheel you in upon a cart
They open the lid while blocking everyones' view they preen and pamper you with tender care
I sit and stare with a bubble gum heart
Disbelief
Rebecca you weren't sick that long
I want to die Please
The Father spoke
Held high the Host
Couldn't breathe I felt so choked
Sister started at the first pew
Come children receive communion
Then pass Rebecca's coffin for a view
Communion didn't mean a thing
Baseball cards and bubble gum
How can a dead heart sting
I looked and saw her breathe
Ringlets and a ribbon in her hair
I cried in my disbelief
Here I am in my sixties now
Thinking back, but sadness is here
My heart still cries how
Baseball cards
Seventh graders don't know love
I think of you Rebecca in bubble gum love

Sinned

Heartbreaking write. It's very well written though. Your use of imagery was perfect.
