I’m mindful to the fact
That money doesn’t grow on trees
One should put some away
And save for future needs

But sadly in today’s world
Where families can bearly get by
Having extra money in the bank
Some would rightfully question why

With health insurance on the increase
And higher prices on milk & bread
All too many families struggle
Just to keep their children feed

Having extras is a luxury
Far too many will never know
Go stand in line at a shelter
On their faces it will show

At the food banks there are people
Who are down on their luck
Not due to lack of effort
In finding a good job they get stuck

Seeing others makes me realize
How fortunate I am not to be in need
Why is it I don’t help out more?
When I know it’s not from greed

There is so much I could go
By lending a helping hand
But day after day here I am
Standing on a soapbox stand

Shame on me, and shame on you
If we sit back and fail to realize
That it only takes a moment
To effect so many lives

So today I set out a challenge
Too all that have our share
To take a precious moment
And show someone else that you care

Open up wide your wallet
Open up wide your purse
Open a hand to the hungry
Open a hand to those who thirst

Donate supplies to the needy
Donate time to the old
Help out a friend in times of bad weather
Protect them from the cold

It all starts with an open mind
It generates speed with a loving heart
Don’t expect things to get better
Until you’re ready to make the start

As for me, I’ll make the change
Finally my eyes are open to see
That one person can make a difference
And that one person will now be me [comments] => 3 [counter] => 146 [topic] => 19 [informant] => Jeff_Scott_Morehead [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 17 [ratings] => 4 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => InspirationalPoems )

I just sent my husband out with all the bills I paid last night to mail off. There has to be a better way. I'm cutting back, and giving more if I can make it work. I try to be generous, but you're right, we are so blessed and shouldn't let others go without---NOT in this land of plenty. Thanks for the timely reminder.

A true write. We struggled through food stamp lines and plasma banks for many years finally arriving at *comfortable* with the kids gone achieved (through education). You just have to be really careful what charities, because most of that money never gets to those who need it. For as long as we were the working poor, only once did we ever get helped and that was through a non-denominational church. We try to help out as close to home as possible unless it's a global issue (like the tsunami) because it's easier to keep track of what helps. You have a really good write here. Blessings.

Very good write. There is one spelling mistake that runs havoc with the rhythm (third stanza, "feed" is written there instead of "fed") but other than that I really liked this. Thanks for sharing
