Words I never could have said to your face,
From far away met that tender place
Inside of you-
And I wonder if they really did
What I meant for them to do,
Or did you see right through
The way you used to?
Trying to get me off your mind
Tonight,
I lied to you for the first time.

I swore that I was happier back in my old life.
Made you believe I was ashamed,
All the times we laughed together-
For me it was fun and games.
I said that hanging around was never in my plans-
My heart didn’t stop when you touched my hand,
I belonged in the arms of another man-
Aiming to break the ties that bind
Tonight,
I lied to you for the first time.

And I can’t take back my words,
But I can’t stand that you’ll hurt,
Thinking I never loved you.
If I let you walk away,
Let you work through this pain,
You can move on like you did before-
And I can’t hurt you anymore.

Tonight,
I lied to you for the last time.
We each have gone our separate ways,
But in my heart you will remain-
Wish I were strong enough
To do what I expect from you-
Trying so hard to get you off my mind-
Baby tonight,
I lied to you for the last time.
