one man
lies in warm grass
& gazes across an azure sea

and an island of white houses,
church spire
and roofs so red
under quiet blue skies

the Croatian day is so sweet
so peaceful
Heaven itself

-o-

we came down through
the middle of the land
down through sweet Slovenia
with little farms
of patchwork

around every corner a haven
and a wonder

and then
through Croatia
& through Vukovar
where the chills ran
down the spine
at ruined homes
bullet riddled walls,
blackened and blasted
& gaping holes where
summer windows had been

& to the coast at last
& torrential rains

as if Heaven was trying
to wash away the past

-o-

finally to Igrane in the night

& in the morning such peace

eating wild figs along the way
feeling the deep quiet
permeate our souls
we explore the coast

where the Romans came
and built fine villas
and gazed at
the ever-changing colours

we journeyed to Dubrovnik
perfect jewel
wonder in a wicked world
survivor of beautiful dreams

such peace in the towns
such heart-aching peace
& wild flowers ready-dried
waiting to be picked

& the sea a million variations of blue

drifting home by the coastal road
we are awe-struck at the beauty

& stop for the night
as a soft orange sun
sets over the Adriatic

-o-

and in the morning to Split
and the long road home

to Austria
where old & new
are good friends
and smile across the years

but I will always
think of Croatia
I hear her whisper
she sings to me

come home

Yes, Croatia is very beautiful. the Adriatic Sea is so many shades of blue - it's incredible. please, make a search on Google of Images of Croatia. have a look at the nature reserve of Plitvice and the incredible gem that is Dubrovnik.... Wonderful places... ;D

but land remains beautiful inspite of the horrors
