Sitting there, waiting …

… listening to the beeps of all the machines.

There is no concept of time,
as one sits and waits for the
end to come.

The watching of the heart rate,
and the rise and fall of the chest.

Yes, I must admit, the waiting
becomes very boring.

Sitting there, in ICU, the ever
constant vigil over a loved one
nearing the end.

It seems they wait.

They wait until the vigil ends,
and the phone rings as you walk
in the door. The voice on the
other end a bearer of expected news.

It was a relief, that call we received,
to let us know the end had came. No
more suffering shall you endure, now
to walk in meadows beneath skies
of blue.

I miss you Mom, and always will.
But I never realized how tediously
slow death would be until that day
in ICU.

Now, I wait patiently for the night
terrors to stop. The reliving of those
two terrible days replay non-stop.

I love you Mom, now and always.
Give hugs to Nanny & Pop Pop.
Shop till your heart’s content.

Only someone who has been through a deathwatch can relate to this. We are all so very human and can only sustain painful emotions for so long. Still, I believe that things are preordained and for good reasons that maybe we don't understand. Your write took me back more than 25 years.
