I found a calendar from 1984
Turned the page to the month of March
The 16th you closed our door

The pictures were of Unicorns
Frolicking and Free
But the March one was a laying horse
Head down, sad, next to a tree

Your writing filled up the squares of the day
With things to do, heavy bills to pay
That Friday the word you wrote was leave
And life had been given another reason to grieve

The Unicorn was our first baby's love
When a newborn I gave a stuffed toy
Looked back at the picture, there next to the horse
Sits a lost looking little boy

She had that stuffed animal for so long
But now it can never be found
So she cries in her Teddy still hugs it so close
You her mother, is never around

I was the parent that stood by her side
Her first word was happy
Crushed by misguided pride
Now she's a fragile adult with a broken inner child
Rarely showing her smile she prefers it to hide

So many years have passed
since that march of eighty four
Unicorns are gone dreams fly no more
That calendar still looks new
I wish I was so preserved
I aged as I absorbed the pain my child never deserved

A baby girl grew damaged
Little sister grew confused
I gave them hugs
Saying it's allright
somehow that just didn't do
I tried to make that Unicorn take off
But her mother was the only one that flew
If only her Unicorn would too [comments] => 5 [counter] => 171 [topic] => 65 [informant] => Alovinmann [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 20 [ratings] => 4 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => toughstuff )
