Sometimes after all these years
My heart still sheds a tear
To return to days of old
When the world wasn’t so cold

Back to when I was just a child
With dreams running wild
About the time when I was ten
Oh how I wish I could go back again

Growing up in that old farm town
With my brothers and sisters around
With mom and dad to keep us straight
Offering guidance that was never late

Life felt so much simpler and free
When no one was depended upon me
There were chores but there was fun
As a family we got it done

When every dinner was around the table
Thanking God that we were able
When TV time started no earlier then eight
Ten o’clock bedtime with no debate

There was no talking back or being smart
With respect for our parents, who would have the heart?
Sharing rooms and hand-me-down clothes
That’s the way this story goes

We never had extras nor did without
Never asked for things when out –a-bout
I never thought that we were poor
But looking back, maybe we were

My dad would work all he could
And probably more then he should
In later years it started to show
And I cried when I watched him go

One by one we all grew up
And drank from the well with our own cup
A close net family we’ve always been
And I think of each one as a trusted friend

As for my mother, she’s still around
The very reason that keeps us sound
I just saw her the other day
And she still has that loving way

We love to talk about years ago
O’ how her stories full my soul
Someday I’ll tell them to my son
After his raising has been done

Thank you for sharing this and bringing back sweet memories for me, Jeff.
Although both my parents are gone now, it still feels as tho they are around, seeing us through the difficult times because of the values they instilled in us as kids.
About those 'hand-me-downs' ... I was the first of 7 girls...so I got the new stuff...lol..
Thanks again
Jenni

Even those of us with less happy memories sometimes long to go back to those simpler times. I had a wonderful grandmother who practically raised me, and your poem brought her back into my thoughts with color and scent. Thank you.
