the pungent stench of rotting flesh burns my nostrils.
out of respect for her, i want to turn away,
but there’s something about her.

there’s a beauty to it:
seeing a corpse sprawled across the floor.
limp, lifeless.
i’m reliving the moment
her final pathetic breath erupted from two dead lungs.
the heart beating furiously...
and as minutes pass, it slows...until it stops.

those soft hands, the ones i’ve held,
are crumbled on the floor next to her:
her body is an inert car wreck of limbs.

the right leg folds under the left,
the broken arms bent in impossible positions.
everything about it excites me:

the sound of bone collapsing under the weight of a hammer,
her once-flawless spinal column is tangled in endless wires.
piercing whimpers choked in sweat and tears.
i’ve taken a perfect anatomy and made a beautiful mess,
yet i feel incomplete.
it hardly seems fair.

brutal murder can’t compare to a broken heart.

WOW!!! This is vividly written. Enjoyed the images this conjured within my mind as I read. And the last line ... well it just sinks its teeth in deep.

peace

I loved this poem, it kept me intrigued all the way throught. Good choice of descriptive words such as 'pungent' to describe the smell in the hallway.

It also explains the meaning of the title of your poem really clearly. The last line is particulary effective and emotional and rounds the poem off beautifully.

Hope to read some more of your poetry.
Lots of Love Laura xxxxx
