feel every eye on me
you either want me or want to be me
and they will say
‘what makes her walk like that
who puts that swing in her hip,
that flip in her hair,
who is she smiling to? Oh, the minx!’
I want my face on magazines
I want small children to ask for my autograph
I want the world in love with my beauty, my grace
I want arrogance to be simple truth
They will say
‘what is her secret?
how did she obtain that halo of confidence
that excuses her from any and all wrong? Who out there
is letting her get away with all this?’
I will laugh, and they will fall over themselves
to catch the sound as it trickles over their disbelief
‘who is she? Who is she with?’ they will ask,
‘who loves her? Who puts
that glow to her skin? Who let her run loose, this angel
with a devil’s lust for life?’
I won’t grace them with an answer,
the less tangible I am the more they want me
but I will turn to you and smile,
not the camera, everyone-is-watching-you
you-are-goddess-make-them-believe-it smile
but such an intimate turning of lips that you will nod back
because you know my secret
and I will become all flash and glitter again
knowing that I can return to you when I tire of my arrogance
when I tire of all these people’s attentions
and you will say
‘I love that glaze over your eyes, the way your hair is all mussed
I love the way you wrestle with your clothes in the morning
the way you nearly vault down the stairs when you are late for work.’
and, strangely enough
it will be enough
