The place was clean not what we expected
So many animals caged
Meowing barking growling acting deranged
One could sence their fear each one somewhere neglected
Imperfected
Rejected
We picked out the skinny one He shakenly got up when inspected him
Eleven months old picked up running loose in Michigans cold December wind
In the pet meeting room we got a better look and inspection
When the warden brought him in he went right to my handicapped son
Put his feet on the power wheelchairs footrest and licked him
Dis is the one I want said Charlie,he picked me
See
Mr Warden could we
We took him home
Tried to comfort him,but he laid there all alone
Wouldn't eat not even a treat bone
Scared of what was going to happen
That first night he slepted with Charlie butt to Charlies chin
The next morning Charlie went to his job at the A.R.C.
Even handicapps have to work
He laid around all day just watching we could see unknown fear in his look
Come Freck
He wouldn't just too unsure
By now we had named him Freckles
he was so cute yet scared
Charlie came home really anxious
Freckles heard his buss and right away perked up
Freckles now had a perpus
Each time we have company
I have to hold onto Freck to keep him away
Our family and friends are so afraid
Freckles acts so dern vicious
Making those strangers cousious
A ferousious bark perhaps a growel
All keep their distance and are careful
Nobody messes with Freckles
Don't condem our little pooch
Once you get to know him he loves the game of kitchycooch
Why you can even rub his tummy
He may give you a lick to see if you are yummy
Nobody is going to hurt his Charlie

I liked that verse. It was a little sloppy and hard to read, but the message was clear. I have worked at the S.P.C.A with the "death row" dogs and it broke my heart, if only you could save them all...

A few years back I got a cat who was so skittish we didn't see her for the first month she lived with us. Last night she climbed up next to me on the couch and almost into my lap. It took a few years, but it was worth it for us and for her. This was a heartwarming write.
