I suppose it is of little surprise…that depression abounds,
When health and fortune begins to wane.
I suppose it is so commonly human…and understandable,
To feel dejected and bitter…and of many things to complain.

One begins to look at what he can truly call his,
Yet at such a time…doesn’t seem to amount to much.
The health is failing…little else seems to matter,
One longs for some reassurance on which to clutch.

Life appears to be so barren and bleak…a joyless dirge,
The melody of hope is just so hard to hear.
Just an eerie ever present awareness…I may be dying,
The days and sleepless nights…filled with dread and fear.

I have enjoyed decades of good health…now that has ended,
Life is a chilling maze of pain, uncertainty and doubt.
I may have ignored God during all of the good years,
But now unwell…I turn to Him…to help me find a way out.

Curious as to what a man will cling to…when life is threatened,
A drowning man will supposedly cling to a floating straw.
He will clutch on to anything that affords some hope,
Perhaps something that for years he chose to ignore.

And so it is with me…in these days of dejection and misery,
The seas of my life…are so troubled, stormy and rough.
Yet I find a great comfort…in the calming realization,
That at this time…prayer to Him…is simply enough.
