Last Remnant of a Beat Generation - The Redraft

We are the generation
Who insist on having the best of everything:
Fine dining, fast cars, first-class degrees
We want to be rich, important
Or at least feel like we are.

An illusion created by the false belief
That our fake images give us power
If people see us as worthy
Then we must be, mustn’t we?
And what goes on in private conversations
And behind closed doors
Is no-one else’s business.
Especially if it presents the idea
That we were ever unsure
Or made a mistake

A cry for help
Stifled by the belief that dependence is a weakness
Yet independence is a sin
You will go here dress like this act like this have friends like this
You will be ultra-normal
Perfection incarnate.

And if one day you decide
You want anything more than everything…
That’s it.
You’re on your own.

Or are you?

Our leaders
Dragging us into a war we didn’t choose
Passing laws we didn’t approve
Abusing the power we bestowed
Beating us down

We need a leader of humanity
But which of us has the audacity
To stand alone and say:
***** your expectations
I’ve got my own.

None of us has the guts.
Instead we turn a blind eye
Speaking out is frowned upon
Trroublemakers,
Rebels-without-a-cause.
They’re just ignorant, selfish
They don’t know how good they’ve got it
They don’t even know what they want.

They want their identities back
To cease to fit the mould
They want adventure, excitement and truth
They can’t have it.

A doomed society
Founded on forgotten things long ago
When a beaten black man was having dreams
A man shot for asking why
And another man crucified for showing us something different.
All duly noted with respect and care
By people who completely missed the point
These men were crazy.
They were on drugs.
They didn’t even attempt to fit,
So we wrote them out.

Yet they remain
A constant threat bubbling under
The frozen surface of authority
Telling us their twisted truths
What to believe
And how
We don’t know how good we’ve got it.

Great job.
I can tell this has a lot of personal significance to you. Maybe it is your life story. You express yourself, elequently. Keep writing. I know what it feels like to write something, that other people will not appreciate on the same level as yourself, but at the same time, still wanting recognition. And that is why you post it. I can see that there is a lot of depth and meaning to this piece, and I appreciate the heart you put in it.

Be True,
zenmind

Well, I'm actually quite arrogant about my poetry as most of the people I've shown it too do appreciate it quite a lot, mainly because it's 'different', or so they claim. My main reasons for posting here is to get a non-biased opinion from people who aren't my friends and colleages.

And thanks for the vote of confidence!
