God was a story, a fairytale, a lie.
As a child she knew she believed
But now she knows she only thought she believed
Because she was taught to believe.
She hated God for playing favorites
For choosing which of his followers to bless.
Surely it wasn’t a coincidence so many people grew up happy
And her life turned out such a mess.
Where was God in grade school
When no one looked her way?
Why did he only put friends before her
That wanted to hurt her and push her away?
Where was he when her mom started drinking
And everyone in the family sat like stones
And she was the only one screaming
Because she was the only on that sat alone.
Where was God when she met that girl
If he so disapproves of it
Why didn’t he teach her a lesson
And fill her heart with guilt?
Where was he when that girl broke her heart?
Was he up in the heavens glaring down?
Thundering an ‘I told you so’ with a most discerning frown?
Where was God when she accepted those drugs
That haunt her to this day?
Because she runs and runs to get away from them
But she cannot get away.
Where was God when her mom had that affair
To warm her soul when she felt numb?
To whisper and console her heart
Until the crying was all done?
He must not care
The black eyes close
And the tears stain the face.
He must not care, and I swear
That if that is the case
Id rather be down here on this lonely Earth
Then up there
In that awful and wonderful place.
