Your book was in the mail that day
Ready and waiting to interrupt
Maybe it was my own obvious interest
That first made her pick it up

She asked if it was poetry…
(I replied, of course, that it was)
She was excited for the discovery
(casually confessing a new love)

And I knew… that feeling, too

She began with The Forrest
And learned because of you
You taught her ventured and contemplated
Then wrath and forbidding too

She was drawn in, just then
(I smiled a bit too much)
She knew, perhaps, that frightened child
(she understood well enough)

And Passing Thoughts… passed through

*****

Later, when she inquired again
I introduced her to you
I remembered a fable, a little bird
And lessons that rang true

She asked if I liked poetry…
(I said, of course, I do)
She smiled a little, looking up at me
(Pleased to know I did too)

And I wondered… if she knew

She asked what “fable” meant
And we talked about it some
I saw the thoughts begin to turn
Felt her imagination run

She whispered her wish
(I remember hoping too)
That she could write a poem herself
(She wanted to write like you)

And I… was wishing too

*****

Between then and now. her love has grown each day
And eventually, just tonight, I was brave enough to say…

Honey, Mommy…. writes poetry too

*****

(Larry and Phil.... I will never be able to thank you enough for the poetry, the support and learning experience (for both my daughter and I). I'll never forget the look on her face tonight. I suspect, that you will understand what an incredible moment it was for me. Thank you both for leading us down the path that brought us to that moment... I remember the first day my daughter asked me to help her write a poem. We were standing on a sunny porch high over the beach and waves of Cape May, and she wanted to write about the ocean. What a rush!
Happy for you!
Stitch

There has never been a moment in my life like the one you just gave me. To help in passing the flame of poetry is more than I could have ever hoped for. I hope it grows and matures and perhaps one day she will be as great a poet as her mother. So before the page gets too much more blurry, your welcome.....and Thank YOU!

I smiled the first time I'd read it, and I've been smiling since. It's a lovely thought.
