"THE SPARROW"
This is a true story as told by
John Thomas Oaks

Chilly was the day in Manhattan, but warm inside the Starbucks Shop.
Not as cold as late December, but enough to send the masses indoors nonstop!
I'm a musician, and Starbucks location is the most lucrative in the world.
Playing our tunes right, apparently, as our basket was full and almost uncurled!

It was a fun, low-pressure gig, and I was playing keyboard, and singing back-up.
My friend added rhythm with an arsenal of percussion for a nice shake-up.
We mostly did pop songs from the '40's and '90's with some originals thrown in.
I noticed a lady sitting in one of the lounge chairs swaying and singing somehow.

After the tune was over, she approached me, "I apologize for singing along on that song."
She asked, "Did it bother you?"
I assured her that we loved it when the audience joined us, even though few!
I then asked her if she would like to sing up front on our next selection?
I was delighted when she said, Okay, do you know a song that is Christian?

Christian hymns? This woman didn't know who she was dealing with!
I'd cut my teeth on hymns, I asked her to name one forthwith.....
She replied,
"Oh I don't know, there are so many good ones, you pick one from long ago."
"Okay," I said, "How about 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow?'"

My new friend was silent, and said, "That one will be just fine."
She slowly nodded her head, and started to sing, her voice was so beautiful,
I got chills up my spine.

Why should I be discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?

The audience of coffee drinkers was transfixed. it was awesome!
Even the gurgling noises of the cappuccino machine ceased.
The employees stopped, and all listened as the song's crescendo increased!

I sing because I'm happy;
I sing because I' m free.
For His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me.

After she sang the last note, the applause was a deafening roar.
Would have rivaled a sold-out crowd at Carnegie Hall's threescore!
Embarrassed, the woman said, "Oh y'all go back to your coffee, I
didn't come in here to do a concert!"
But the ovation continued, and I embraced my new friend to comfort!

I then said, "You dear, have made my whole year. That was beautiful!"
"Well, it's funny that you picked that particular hymn, it was restful."
I then asked, "Oh really, why?"
She hesitated again, "That was my daughter's favorite song," she would imply......

"Yes," she said, and then grabbed my hands.
The applause had subsided and it was business as commands.
"She was only 16, died of a brain tumor just last week!
I said the first thing that found it's way through my stunned silence.
"Are you all right, are you weak?"

She smiled through tear-filled eyes and squeezed my hand, "I'm fine
I'm gonna be Okay."
"I've got to keep trusting the Lord, and singing His songs, I must go, I can't stay!"
She picked up her bag, gave me her card, and then she was gone.
Was it just a coincidence that we happened to be singing in that shop,
or were we drawn?

Coincidence that this wonderful lady just happened to walk into that particualr place?
Coincidence that I just happened to pick her daughter's favorite song?
Or was it His Grace?

Coincidence? I refuse to believe it, He has been arranging encounters
in human history,
From the beginning of time, He could help a woman who has just lost her daughter,
to hear his words grandly!
It was a great reminder that if we keep trusting Him,
Keep singing His songs, nothing could possibly be too grim!

Connie,
Truly magnificent. Incredible write. My favorite to date, and there are so many you have that rival for that distinction, in my opinion.
