The Wall

As I stood before the wall
I felt so insignificant
so undeserving to occupy this space
to breathe
to feel my heart
pump life to my limbs
As I stood before the wall
this monument to the dead
I am reduced to tears
My fingers trace the letters
carved in stone
Names without faces
some I still recall
Tiny momentoes
left to weather and fade
tributes all
mark heartbreak
Candles burn
as will our memories
of loved ones lost
but not forgotten
