"LOVINGCRITTERS"

LovingCritters grew to hate the day of her birth.
For on that day, her mother, a Cheyenne
Indian flew far away from Mother Earth!

Small infant, tiny boned.
Black as the darkest night, for hair.
Legend insists she was born....
High in the mountains, in a wolf's lair!

A father so proud of his only child.
A gentle and noble man,
now, with a heart beguiled!
Carefully carrying her on his back, Indian style,
He at once sent for his sister
to watch over her for a little while.

Searching his camp for the cries
of another wee one.
His search was ended before it had begun.
At the river's edge washing clothes.
His eyes came upon a papoose,
on the back of "Tiny Toes,"
as he approached, she rose.

Very softly, as all Indians speak.
"Sister Tiny Toes," would you consider
nursing my only child?
We've traveled many moons,
She is very weak!"

Two shadows meshed as one.
Could be seen from the horizon of the setting sun.
'Tiny Toes' gently held the infant to her breast.
Helping her nurse, but little, then rest.
'Running Bear' and his sister, 'Flying Birds.'
Knew at that moment,
Mother Earth had heard their words!

'Tiny Toes' at once accepted her assignment
Quietly with honor, as a lowly servant,
This child was the remnant of it's Father the Chief.
She could also sense 'Runny Bear's' grief!

"My child will not be named," her father said.
Until she grows with character, whichever way it's aimed.
The whole village embraced the tiny one.
Some had already named her "Tiny Raven."
Black hair and blue eyes like the sky.
Others called her "Blue Flower."
Those that were close and saw her kindness
for all animals began calling her "Creature Lover."

She grew strong, and with each passing day,
You could find her with water snakes up her sleeves,
Small fawns hidden beneath leaves.
Frogs and snails could be found inside her inner pockets.
Tamed squirrels up most trees,
furnished with many acorn lockets!
Carrots pulled from gardens prematurely.
Smuggled to rabbits, ponies, and birdies.
Dogs followed her throughout the camp,
on dry days and damp!

She lacked fear of any creature near.
Renewing, healing, watching over without fear!
A child with a heart like Mother Earth.
Helping all critters to be glad of their birth!

Running Bear raised his voice and would proclaim.
"On this day, my daughter will have a name.
Like her mother before her, whom loved all critters,
large and tall, big and small, even those that crawl,
She will be known as "LovingCritters"
because she loves them all!

Indian women work very hard, it's their desire to do so.
Indian warriors have to scout, and hunt about,
And so, has been carried on like this throughout!
LovingCritters did not like a woman's work.
She didn't like stringing beads, nor preparing food.
Everyone realized from the very
beginning she had a "quirk!"

Because her father was Chief, and her Mother had died.
She was allowed to ride with her father by his side.
He loved her so dearly, she could do no wrong.
He taught her to hunt and be very strong!
Her gift was a pony with a long white nose.
She called him "White Nose," and when they rode,
She would call him "Singing Breeze"
as he galloped with ease, through the Aspen trees!

As she rode out of camp, a bareback little scamp.
She was adored by all, and many times called "LadyHorse."
For when she rode they were like one.
You could not see where one ended,
and the other had begun!

The day she inquired about her mother's death,
was the day she wanted to return to where,
she had breathed her last breathe.
Her father explained it was many moons away,
The rains had come......she would have to wait,
perhaps for many suns to set on this day!

LovingCritters was not used to being told "No!"
When the whole camp was bedded down for the night.
She stepped with light moccasins under moonlight,
to her beloved horse, she jumped upon,
and by morning was a whole moon beyond!

She remembered the place of her birth,
For her father had taken her there to say a prayer.
over the site of her mother's grave.
She traveled alone and more fast not slow!
She soon arrived where she had planned to go!

She dropped the reins from around White Noses neck,
descended to her mother's grave and then kneeled down.
Pleading to the Great Spirit of the Dead,
this is what she said,
"Why did my mother have to fly, to leave me all alone?"
I want her back, and I want her back now!!!"
"I can't figure so many things out? Please won't you allow,
to let her come back to me?" "I really need her, my mother.
whom I never even got to see!!!"

LovingCritters was pleading and crying, she was sure
that what she heard was the voice of the Eagle
shrieking in the night, or perhaps the white owl.
Was it a bird, she could not identify the fowl?
She listened for a moment or two and then realized
the sound she was hearing was wolf pup cries.

She crawled to their lair, and sat down there.
She comforted them as she allowed
them to snuggle in her thick long black hair.
"Where is your Mother, little ones?
Never you fear, I'm here!"

The next morning, she found their Mother dead!
It was poison that someone had feed!
Her heart ached now, these 5 little critters were
the same as she.
No mother to nurture them,
no comforter to keep them warm.
No protector to heed the alarm!

She shared her provision with them.
Then tucked all five in her saddle bags.
As tired as she and White Nose felt, they both knew
what they had to do!
No sound could be heard,
as they rode through brush and comb
5 little critters need not cry, for they
knew they had found a new home!

LovingCritter's spirit was never peaceful.
No wigwam door could hold her inside.
But when she arrived with her little pups five,
She stayed close by so they could thrive!

With her loving kindness and tender ways
They soon became, small cuddly balls of fur.
They could be held closely, for they were very tame!
It was told, she could hold one in the palm of her hand.
LovingCritters was the only one that could understand.
Losing a mother was like losing your homeland!
No roots, no identity, just questions,
with no answers to set your curiosity free!

The little pups grew from the love she supplied.
They ate with her, and slept with her,
and even defied the wish of her father!
"They are grown now, give them back to Mother Earth.
They would be so much happier than by your berth!"
LovingCritters could not even imagine
what her life would be like,
without each and every little critter five by her side!

She and White Nose with five wolves following behind
explored every canyon, with caves, and conclaves.
Roamed with the buffalo,
and bedded down with them at night!
Seven critters now, sound to sleep 'neath the moon's light!

She didn't recall nor understand how it all took place.
but her heart was changing, she began
to look beyond her critters.
She would catch herself gazing at the men!
With the son of Tiny Toes she did not have to pretend.
She had known him for a lifetime, just one wigwam away.
She knew him well, for they played together many a day!

She loved his character, and he was liked too!
That was important for LovingCritters
so she knew what to do.
She asked her father permission for him to share a meal.
Her father agreed, but only with one deal.
She would rid their wigwam of all her critters five.
So when the meal was served, no one would have to dive!

Running Bear was very pleased, and observed
This was the first time LovingCritters was every heard
to say, she would obey her father's word.
Out the critters went until the meal was spent,
she shoved tiny portions for them under her tent!

Her playmate, her friend had grown
up before her very eyes.
She herself had grown,. and there in lies,
A beautiful love story between two young Indian folk.
By the light of the moon, they agreed to yolk.

Swift Like The Deer came to the ceremony in full array
The Great Spirit of Love had answered his prayer.
He had loved her from the first day he heard her say,
"My name is LovingCritters, may I be your friend today?"
Most in the camp had a secret among themselves.
Outside the newlywed couples tent could be seen
Five big grey wolves unhappy, yet keen.
Their mistress had set them aside for a new routine!

LovingCritters had known the love for her creatures small,
But never in all of her dreams could she
have imagined a love so tall!
Taller than any mountain she had ever climbed.
More beautiful than any song she had ever rhymed.
A rushing creek, a rippling stream, a torrid waterfall,
she had enjoyed and could see,
but now she could also feel
their beauty and joy, so deep, so wide,
so spacious, so real!
She was surrounded by beauty
so intense, her eyes would reveal.
She loved Swift Like the Deer with
every fiber of her being.
They were entwined as one,
no longer two hearts pleading.

"Perhaps if the wolves could speak,
they could have seen it coming from over the hill.
No one knows that mournful morning so still!
As the Great Spirit of the Sun peaks
his head over the edge.
No one was warned, nor even awakened
so they could protect
their little ones, their loved ones,
their neighbors from death's ledge!

"White mean blue coats stormed their camp!
With sticks of fire flashing, soon
setting each wigwam a blaze!
Each sleeping person, rising, never
realizing their fate!
They grabbed their children and ran in all directions.
As they ran they were found
by crazed horseman sitting up high.
Sticks of fire aimed with accuracy, none went nigh!
They dropped with their children
and brothers with n'er a sigh!"

"Screams of confusion and torrents of blood!
What is happening to us?
We've done no one any harm?
Why are you doing this to us?
The only answers they could hear
was more firing from their sticks!
That was the day the spirits heard
more suffering, more moans,
and outcry per size, than other
nation has ever endured!"

"I was shot in the head with a piece of lead!"
replied Chief Bear I was left for dead.
But it only bumped my head, and during that night,
I came back to the land of the light!
To this day I wish I could have
flown away with my tribe.
For no Chief should ever have to see nor describe!"

"The freshly fallen snow was bright red
with the ambushed dead!
Tiny tots pulled from papoose had been scalped alive.
I could tell they were not dead,
for they bled until they flew away!
The women had been scalped, some raped
then their bellies ripped open, insides
falling onto the snow!
I screamed that night, and fell to my knees!
I prayed for the mean white men in blue coats,
for hearts to grow!
Why? Why? Why? Oh Great Spirit,
were we not given a chance to know?"

"I searched for the living, I walked
through out the entire night!
Hugged their bodies, my people,
and no one could see the light!
I was left behind to tell, that every single soul
in my tribe that night,
left our Dear Mother Earth, and took flight!"

"I approached her tent, that of my LovingCcritters!
I am called Running Bear because I am bold,
but I knew I could not look!!!
That part of the story will never be told!
Suddenly, I knew her tent was empty.
The wolves were gone, and so was she.
I saw her tracks, and those of White Nose.
He too was gone, is it possible, could it be true?"

I'm suddenly very weak, I must rest and then I will go.
I was awakened by strange voices
I lay very still like the fawn deer.
Are those voices I hear of a friend,
or have they returned to do it again?"

"Please Great Spirit of the Snow, please go!
We must track for Lovingcritters and Swift Like the Deer!
you will cover the track, we will never get her back!
My friends were the best "trackers" of all Indians around!
We stayed with their tracks until the iron mountain sound.
At Vedauwoo her tracks disappeared, no struggle,
nor sign, ''Twas like her footsteps had marched into time!"

"We continued to track Swift Like The Deer,
Up a high incline inside a deep aperture,
Swift Like The Deer's body was found.
He had been hit from white man's firing stick,
and had bled out upon the ground!"

"We could hear the mournful cry of LovingCritter''s five,
It's said that they cry each night at the light of the moon,
They are saying with each howl "We Love You!
"We Love You," Come care for your five!
Down to this day, you can still hear their mournful tune!"

I searched this area for years, with no sign
of my beloved child, LovingCritters!
Legend again insists that she really does exist.
Perhaps in the land of the dead, but I'd heard it said.
When her wolves five mournfully cry,
She appears with stampeding white stallions,
riding on a huge white thunderous cloud!"

She is known now as LovingSpirits!
It is also said, that she is saying, "I'm Loving Spirits!!!"
very clear and loud!
"I've come to collect the innocent spirits of my people
who were ambushed and tortured that bloody day!!!"
"I am LovingSpirits, and it is I who will repay!

"LovingCritters" is my Indian pen name in real life,
because I have 5 dogs and love
all critters wild and tame!

"In loving memory of
every single American Indian
that lost their home, and most of them, their lives.....
because of the lust and greed of the pale face!

"Vengeance is mine, and retribution,
at the appointed time, their foot will move unsteadily
for their disaster is near!"
From the Great Spirit's

This poem is being considered for
a movie.....However; I will
not give them all the Royalty
