Autumn Twilight

Contributed by pvd on Thursday, 19th August 2004 @ 08:57:15 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

A pair of geese glide silently
on the water, as the moon
and stars shimmer on
the ripples of Mill River.

Cool, crisp air carries
the fragrance of pine needles
and the scent of smoke
from a distant fire.

The old willow stands on
the river bank naked,
stripped of its leaves,
a skeleton of bark
and branches, scarred
and gnarled, a ghostly
apparition shuddering
and bending in the wind.

Still it endures,
rooted to the ground.
And at thirty-nine
I’m turning gray,
standing alone
on the river’s edge,
wrapped in the mist
wafting through
the cattail reeds,
watching summer’s
dead leaves drift away.

Good imagery.... somehow this reminded me of one of my poems....where I compare myself to a dry branch...
Thanks for sharing this..

Once again I have to comment on your meticulous attention to detail. I have loads of admiration for your style of writing. This is a very beautiful poem penned with exceptional talent.

wonderful, crisp in language, brought about a true feeling of autumn in your verse.

As usual --

Very nice segue of autumnul metaphor into personal ageing. Thank goodness we don't drop our hair each year, though. Crisp, clear imagery a real bonus here.
