Array ( [sid] => 60717 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => I Once Named A Dragon [time] => 2004-08-19 16:13:14 [hometext] => I must've hit my head at Bernard's harder than I thought. I know it is long, but I couldn't stop !! Enjoy, I'm gonna go find some ice ... [bodytext] => I was ...
Lost and wandering, through a dark tunneled maze
Seeking a way out, I'd been in there for days
I rounded a corner, stopping dead in my tracks
Before me a cavern, and a Dragon staring back
I knew if I ran, to a crisp I'd be burned
So I mustered my courage and the tables I turned
"Stay right where you are", in my strongest of voice
I yelled to that Dragon, as if it had no choice
I thought I should move while I had its attention
And entered the cave attempting fluid retention
Both arms I did raise, and in a voice I thought firm
Said " I am a Great Wizard ", then I looked rather stern
"I want not your treasure, I want not your scales"
"I came only",I said "to hear a Dragon tale."
My words were considered as I stood there confused
For this mighty Dragon seemed clearly amused
The head then was lowered to look me in the eye
And the simplest of questions, it asked me just "Why ?"
Now what could I say to keep me out of trouble ?
I needed something quick, something right on the double
I'd heard that some Dragons had instincts eternal
Especially true, were in matters paternal
So I prayed and I hoped that this was the case
As I stared right into that huge Dragon's face
"You see", I then stated, "My daughter is ill"
"A magical poison, that is meant to kill"
"Administered by an evil old Hag and..."
"The only known cure, is the tale of a Dragon"
The head then did raise, with a light puff of smoke
I thought that perhaps the Dragon might choke
Then it began softly rumbling with laughter
It said "Just to be sure, let's be clear what you're after."
"Is it tail - as in that at the end of my frame ?"
"Or a story, for which, I will need a name ?"
I realized then my potential mistake
One word, with two different meanings to take
"A story", I sputtered, "a story indeed, "
"From the lips of a Dragon, is just what I need !"
It stated "So be it, a story for you"
"Just give me a name, one strong, wise and true."
What name to a Dragon, could I hope to bestow ?
Dexter, or Wilbur, or perhaps maybe ... Beau ?
I sat and I pondered, considering my fate
I needed a name before it was too late
My love's name was Nancy, ancient stories are myth
As I fought to combine them, I came up with this ...
"Nazmythian !" I blurted, and hoped for the best
The huge head was lowered, as if laid to rest
Eyelids did open, as the name mulled about
I heard "That'll do fine", I wanted to shout
There are things about Dragons some people don't know
Like, where did they come from, or where do they go
Well, this beautiful creature told me stories galore
When I thought it was finished, it told me some more
I discovered some facts that were much lesser known
They could sence magic, and truth by your tone
I started to worry for fear I'd been caught
I was simply a Bard, and a great wizard, naught
I did have a daughter, though she was not sick
I made up that story, it was only a trick
My discomfort was noticed, and the great beast then said
"If I thought you were trouble, you'd already be dead."
"Truth is, my friend, you'd be hardly a snack"
"Not worth the effort to hold the flame back"
Two words that I heard struck right to the core
I could not help myself, I just had to know more
"Did you mean what you said, you just called me friend ?"
The head simply nodded and began to ascend
See, the Dragon was lonely and wanted to chat
The only cave mate was a little brown rat
So we did converse just a short while more
Then I found out there was much more in store
The magic of Dragons can cause some regret
The longer you're with them, the more you forget
A defense that won't ever let me come back
With an army that just might stage an attack
It was soon time to leave and I was guided back out
Gently directed by that big Dragon snout
It gave me a tooth before we parted ways
So it could find me and come visit some day
At that moment the Dragon did heard me exclaim
"Oh dear, it seems I've forgotten my name !"
In a soft quiet voice, sounding most motherly
She said ...

I wish to express sincere gratitude to all who make it through that . I know I got carried away but the words just kept flowing. I even shortened it twice. Anyway, I will not post such lengthy works in the future, of that you have my sincere and solemn vow.

That said, I tip my hat and bow silently out of the room.

Nazmythian ~

This is a wonderful tale and I was so interested I did not realize the length till finished. Even some very short stories can be very long. This seem just the right length to me.

What a marvelous story........wasn't hard getting through it all! The first thing I thought when I first met you Naz........was, "Where did he get that name?" Now we all know. You are a great story teller........I sat on the edge of my chair! Story telling for some isn't great......but for your readers.......it's more than a flair! It was written with care......and we could tell!
Loved it!
More coming I hope

Dearest Naz, I agree full heartedly with lovingcritters! Just recently I have started to ponder on where you got your exotic name and what does it mean... Now I finally know! You truly are a magnificent story teller! Sober or delusional, this was a marvelous piece of writing, and not lengthy at all in my eyes! Lolz! Beautiful flow! Shed onto me some of that rhyming talent, great poet! Very different and intriguing! It kept my eyes glued on the screen till the very end! Exellent! BRAVO! I throw roses at your feet! May all remember this sweet poem, of a dragon and the man who named it! Forever yours,

Votre fleur de sang et amour

I, too, did not realize the length until I read your comment and glanced back at it. It moves the reader along and it so delightful, that the length is not noticed at all. You certainly needn't apologize for it!

I had seen your post in a forum explaining, briefly, how you arrived at your screen name. I have to say I prefer this longer tale. From the moment your lovely dragon asked "Why", I was hopelessly drawn in. (LOL! Maybe it was even BEFORE that!) I'm intrigued by the opening lines... lost and wandering... and how it transitioning to being 'guided' and 'directed' at the end. Clearly, you found your way when you found your dragon... when... you found your voice. Maybe you didn't intend it that way... but... I thought it was a lovely thought.

Thrilled to know you've named that dragon,
SNM

The Surreal eeL y'know Feel

You have named a dragon.
Now, will the dragon

Good narrative verse.

Well done!
