I almost like this one because I've been trying to express in poetic form the concept in it for quite some time now. [bodytext] => I remember the day
I discovered the word "evanesce"
it was a dreary day,
quiet and grey and still
when I fell in love with that word

evanesce
I whispered it, enchanted,
listened as the sound diffused into the air
just like its namesake
and I swear it colored the air
with its soft blue-grey tint

evanesce
the gentle buzz of the 'v'
the lilt in syllable transition
and then the soft hiss at the end
trailing off and embodying itself

evanesce
I looked it up in the dictionary
then on dictionary.com
reading each definition
to make sure I'd found
every shade of meaning
the word could possibly hold

evanesce
I found its roots
learned that it was a derivative
of the Latin
evanesco, evanescere
and that it came from the word-parts
'ex' and 'vanus',
of Indo-European origin

evanesce
and I found a site which showed me
all biblical and Shakespearean uses
of that onomatopoetic word
and read each passage of them
wherein my word
--yes, mine!--
had been penned

evanesce
and, do you know,
I knew that word,
when I was done
and there was a frail sort of kinship
between myself and 'evanesce'
and I daresay I understood that word

evanesce
just for a moment,
I had a wild dream, hope, goal
whatever you wish to name it
to make my way through the dictionary
and someday know every word
as I did 'evanesce'
and I knew that then,
--then!--
I would call myself a poet.

evanesce
it wasn't very long, though,
before my dream, itself, evanesced
faded into a grey backdrop
of "wouldn't it be nice if"s
and it was, after all,
a child's dream
and one with no hope of completion

evanesce
but I still, every now and then,
type the URL to dictionary.com
and look up 'evanesce'
and think that, perhaps,
I am a small fraction
--small as the fraction
of that solitary word
out of all the words in the world,
but a fraction, just the same--
of a poet
and I can't help but smile. [comments] => 15 [counter] => 301 [topic] => 25 [informant] => ShadowDaughter [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 34 [ratings] => 7 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => MiscPoems )

Nice poem. Poetry writing for me started out of the pain of city life but is growing into something more bueatiful everyday. This is a great reminder to all poets to be inspired by something, even if it is a word.

A reflection o'er a word? Certainly worth the muse.

Your thoughts are with me.

Thanks for thinking them - and sharing them.

I must say! A fraction of a poet dare not attempt to compare to you. This poem is breathtaking. I truly enjoy it.
Lots of love and peace be with you,

This laid out perfectly, as if just coming to you in poetic form, and falling onto the page- nice job capturing thought so gracefully.

Extremely beautiful and meaningful write...I love how you encompassed the relationship the poet has with words here, it's just amazing to read. "Evanesce" is also one of my favorite words and reading this poem has made me love it more.

I must confess, evanesce has ever been one of my favourites, along with aquiesce, luminesce, iridesce, and several others.

This is a perfect ode to the lovely word, and extremely creative. Your mind is wonderful.

Keep writing,
-Viking Gerty.

Hurrah! A poem after a linguist's own heart!
You've captured your desire to write of this with expert grace. I'm impressed.

And it is truly a lovely word. Bravo on this!!!

Interesting concept, I must say. To be perfectly honest, it was a little too prose-y for me... particularly the 4th, 5th and 6th stanzas. I do like that word, though. lol. Evanesce... mm... yes, definitely a nice word choice. :D

You are an amazing poet. A poet's poet - the very best kind. It is not the word itself that matters here but your love of it... how you embrace it... how it becomes alive and whole and something more than the simple putting together of letters. To have taken a single word and know it so intimately as a feeling, a thought, a sound, history and... well... everything - is extraordinary. Though defined and used previously by others... yes! you made this word your very own. You made it special in ways that no one else could. I think... honestly... that it's entirely possible to make every word just that special. It happens, if you should let it happen, each time you say a word, touch it, write it, think it, hear it... and for someone like you - it happens, maybe, without a conscious attempt.

Thinking your a wild dream, hope, goal - whatever you wish to name it, was achieved after all-
SNM

Nora,

You can take anything and make a beautiful poem out of it. You have an amazing ability to write, everything...that you ever think of...into a wonderful journey through your thoughts. I love it all. Thank you for sharing again.

Nora, it seemed as if your soul was speaking to me. Funny you write a poem about this word, because the word mesmerizes me too. Ahhhh, this write is like a breath of fresh air. *S* Cynthia
