Young and in love,
Battling the doubts,
Together we ignored,
Our parents objecting shouts.
They all thought we were foolish,
That we were wasting our time,
Only we knew,
The feeling divine.
We argued, talked,
Made up, and fought,
But always we pulled through.
I loved you up to the day,
The army called for you.

I watched you pack your bags,
And took you to the train.
I watched the distance spread,
And I felt the pain.
For months I read your letters,
Hundreds of times each,
I wrote of things to bring you back,
Anything I thought might reach.
They said the war was almost over,
And you'd come home to me.
I loved you up to the day,
The war took you away.

For a year I grieved your passing,
The memories harassing.
But I will never forget you,
My true love no one believed in.
Then I met a man,
Who met my parents' plan.
He took me out night after night,
And fell in love with me.
But trying with all my might,
I couldn't make my heart agree.
For somewhere lost across the seas,
My heart still beat for you and me.

A year had passed when this same man,
Slid a ring on a finger on my left hand.
My mother cried, my father smiled,
And I kissed him and danced in a white dress.
We laughed, we talked,
My husband and I,
And lived in a house set way up high.
When my husband left for work,
I stood on the balcony and waved goodbye.
Soon we chose a name,
For my little son to be.
I called him your name,
To keep you close to me.
I finished having children,
After I'd had three.
But I loved you up to the day,
I saw my youngest marry.

So I settled for a man,
Who never could be you.
I loved him well enough,
To be happy and get through.
I spent thirty-two years with him,
Watched our children grow up fine,
But I never looked at him,
And saw what had been mine.
He passed away one autumn day,
And I wept for him as well,
But to you I never got the chance,
For one last thing to tell.

I loved you many years ago,
And kept you in my heart.
I loved a man but always was,
A little torn apart.
I knew I'd never have you back,
But hoped to find that love.
I spent my lifetime knowing that,
I didn‘t have the best.
And though my family did come first,
It was you I did adore.
So miserable in life,
I became the pitied wife.
I loved a man who wasn't you,
And knew I'd never find the love,
I shared with you that was so true.
I loved you up to the day,
I was taken to a cloud with you,
To finally, finally, say…

what a beautiful, emotional poem! I am sure this has truly happened before, too, sadly enough. Well done!

Wow. With a *new* husband in Iraq, your words have touched me deeply enough to make tears flow just thinking of the voice's loss. You have put into words a longing we all fear - to find a love and lose it - yet having to live on. This depth and feeling in your writing is monumental. Thank you so very much.

Oh, Calista - this really got me. A lot of my poems are about a first love (and not one regarding the man that I was married to). I know, exactly I think, the feeling - if you're lucky enough to know true love... it's impossible to forget.

Thank you so much for sharing this-- truly, it brought me some comfort to know that I'm not the only one. Sometimes it does feel that way.

A wonderful, touching piece... again, thank you for sharing it!
