The dog, which lives in the house where
its owner leaves early and comes home
late, waits for me at the end of the lane
where the secondary road begins to take
her for a walk. For weeks she had watched
me going for my daily stroll wanted to
come along but didn’t have the courage,
till one day I sensed her behind me and
stopped, unsure she made herself smaller
than she is until I called her and she came
running wagging her tail ecstatically.
Mind, not that I see her that often busy as
she chasing something I don’t see under
bushes and rocks, but from time to time
she comes back to the road to see if I’m
still there. Usually we parted at the lane
only now she has taken to follow me
home where I feed her and she sleeps on
the sofa till it gets dark and it’s time
to go home. But we have to be careful
now those elderly men with guns in arms
and bellies full of wine stalk the landscape,
at a distance she looks like a fox and those
people, who kill for sport, tend to shoot at
anything that moves in the greenery.
