Were taught through life to never waste
Each meal should be treasured, enjoy each taste.
To savor each drink as though it’s our first
Yet taught through the years to control our thirst.

To share our knowledge, treasure our thoughts
Follow our dreams, but don’t get caught.
For following dreams may not be the norm
And would only give others reason to scorn.

Seems only the bravest of hearts can dream,
While others stop them with plans, and schemes.
But for those who dare to follow their hearts
The world has no bounds, each new dream that they start.

Wasting a talent they claim is a sin,
Yet we teach our children to hold it in.
God is watching and wants them to shine,
Could it be that were jealous of what they may find.

I notice the child, his picture he paints
Free like the wind, with no complaints.
If you take time to notice it’s without a doubt
His favorite color seems to stand out.

I see the parent, correct him again,
Instead of enjoying what comes from within.
As an adult I find it more and more to be true,
That sometimes its ok, to “Waste the Blue.”

I've read through a lot of dross today . . .

Thankfully, this one's made me forget them all, and lighten my weary heart. I'd already decided that this was the best poem I'd read all day halfway through. I'm going to leave now and tell others that it will be the same for them.

Refreshing and thoughtful, and welcome.

Welcome to YPDC.

Yes, their creative talent needs to be encouraged not discouraged. Why do they have to be molded in the same box as everyone else. Why can't they live in a triangle if they choose? This is absolutely an eye-opening piece I wish more and more people and educators could and would read.
Great work.

This is beautiful, Woody! This reminds me so much of one of my favorite poems. The other is written from the child's perspective (a child who adored yellow). You have captured the very same sentiment here... and wonderfully so. Believing, whole heartedly, that our colors simply weren't meant to be kept between the lines.

For the record... you had me with the title...
