A child of ten, in a small farming town,
shared a make believe friend, wore a torn thin gown.
Together they walked, her bare feet in the earth,
this friend shared the solitude, she had known since birth.
They often talked quietly, for she needed to share,
her views of her world, when no one would care.
She talked of the hunger, abuse and much pain.
So her friend held her hand, in the cool summer rain.
They traveled together through more restless years,
she thought of her future, with uncertain fears.
She was a child of innocense, with a need to be loved.
Instead was most often, given a push and a shove.
And, what would she do, as she soon turned eighteen,
knowing there was a world she had not yet seen?
Then, a proposal of marriage, quickly came about,
she now was aware, this meant a way out.
But little thought was given, to what indeed it meant,
as later in life, she would now know the full consequence.
Her partner now sits, his own mind so ill,
and again, she must gather the strength from her will.
Again, there's this need, to call back her friend,
who'll again hold her hand, till her story does end.
They'll remember the walks, her flowing brown hair,
the gown that was torn, and her feet that were bare.

this poem stirs so many feelings. The writing is fantastic and the topic is tragic but real. Not to be read lightly and that is wonderful. So deep and Psycological. Well done.

Such memories we have from our earlier lives, some might be pain inflicting thoughts, some might be comforting memories of happiness.
The piece was very human and refreshingly realistic.
Thank you for sharing.

good poem, but the thoughts it caused me were repulsive! it made me remember things in the novel, my antonia, and i could not stand that book. it is amazing how the past can affect us today, and some people cannot even realize it.
