Don Huerra's foreman, Diego Silva, also known as El Segundo, was born in Guanajuato, Mexico of poor indian parents. Before the revolution, his father had worked six hours a day, six days a week in a mine carrying heavy ore bags on his shoulders to the smelter. At that time he was called a tenatero, beast of burden. Spanish officials took most of his wages for taxes often beating him if he was slow in giving. At the end of twenty years his condition was worse than when he'd began. In desperation, he and other miners had followed Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in general insurrection. Their battle cry was: "Long live the Catholic religion! Long live America! Death to bad government! Death to the "gachupines!" Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was an aging priest from the village of Dolores, Guanajuato. Because he'd introduced two illegal industries, wine making and silk culture, government officials had come to his village destroying the vines and mulberry trees.
