Incredibly... we were standing next to each other even then. *** [bodytext] => We were not so very different then
Obviously friends even when we were ten
Two silly girls standing together that day
On the eve of the great PB&J essay

The other ones have long since gone
Our friendship, though, still carries on
Fifth grade clothes and bad hair styles
But most amusing are the innocent smiles

What we know now was a mystery then
Remember how naïve we were, friend?
How the boys were cute and so kind
When broken hearts never crossed our minds?

Decisions were so simple and so few
There was so little that we had to do
We worried only about doing well in school
We, for the most part, followed the rules

The future came with an instruction guide
On the guidance of others we then relied
No one mentioned that as we grew
We would run out of “supposed to do’s”

We crossed all the items off the list
We followed the path, dreamed and wished
We took some detours here and there
But life was still kind and seemingly fair

First dates, proms, and eventually we wed
A couple years later, tucking children in bed
Lots of school for you, too much work for me
Life seemed harder and was less carefree

All these years later, the smiles falter a bit
We’re a little confused, we both now admit
Wondering exactly what lies up ahead
Unanswered questions filling up our head

That silly photo tells us exactly what to do
If you stand by me and I stand by you
Just as we did for the picture that day
Then together, certainly, we’ll find our way

Awww, SNM, I love this . . . fantastic poem. Some of your phrases are just so jaw-droppingly stunning, I can't get over it.

The fifth stanza's pure genius.

always a fan,
Nora

Is this what you call your 'hideous' nostalgia?

Seems rather beautific to me, but then i'm horribly nostalgic too. ;o)

Loved reading it - I'm sure your friend will too . . .
Thanks for sharing.

You wrote an essay on PB & J? I'd love to see that! :-)

Ah, the innocence of childhood onto adult hood. A wonderful display of lasting friendship and a bit of history. Very nice.

Tim
