endless stripe of highway fading off into the sun
no place to go, no reason why
and that just made it beautiful
radio murmuring tunes from way back when.
that song tiptoed in with familiar chords
a preschool friend, we grinned to greet it
shiny new perspective but the notes were all the same
and we sang just 'cause songs should be sung.
didn't know the words as well as almost all the others
at the ending of a verse I just assumed the chorus came
we began to sing the chorus, you and I
'til I realized I'd remembered wrong-- that part was simply music
I stopped, cut off mid-word, but you continued
singing 'cause you loved it, to the silent car and music

and that was the day when I formed my first goal in life. It was enjoyable though.

Involving and evocative . . .
Although we don't get to know what that goal was, it doesn't matter.

Enjoyable read.
Thanks for writing it.

Whoa Nora... You're on a roll. Loved it. :) Seems so innocent, and it bring back a lot of memories of the times I've been singing in the car... "just 'cause songs should be sung." Loved it. :)

You triggered so many memories for me. I can't count the times my heart has called me home and all I had to do was to merge onto the ramp and go home to my parents. It would be so simple yet I kept on driving.

Music is closely related to emotion and memories for me so I really enjoyed this poem so much.

I look forward to your next one. :)

Did you notice that it's getting a bit crowded in the car, Nora??? My best friend and I hopped in too! WE completely understand this piece.... not to very long ago, we sung our way back to high school while cruising along. Oh, yes, I can relate to this piece!

Intrigued by the last line,
SNM
