Cursing me with
The nastiest words you knew,
But I couldn't hear them.
I could hear those times
You yelled from the bleachers,
Cheering me on in the toughest of games,
Encouraging me when I missed a shot,
Jumping up for joy when I nailed a three-pointer.

You raised your fist,
But the thought that you might hit me
Couldn’t cross my mind
Because I remembered
That time you raised your fist
And slammed it on the principal’s desk.
Then, you were defending me,
Declaring my innocence.
You would have never let me down
Back then.

Your arm flew through the air,
But I couldn’t imagine
That it could have possibly been coming at me
Because it never had before.
But, you never drank before either.
You never smoked,
And you never brought strange women
Home to the empty house.
I guess a lot has changed, though,
Since mom died.

Your hand collided with my face,
Jolting me sideways,
Forcing me to see the truth.
As the pain pounded in my head,
I realized that there was nothing to cover this up.
Not this one. This one dad,
Was all you.

Oh my god! That is so sad. I'm really glad that it isn't true. Very powerful and emotional poem. I can relate to it kind of. I just got in a big fight with my mom and she kicked me in the stomach. ( I am pregnant with twins)

I love how this is done... conversational, filled with quiet anger and a lot of sadness. It is so representative of what how we often do not want to believe what is right in front of our eyes and how difficult it can be when the time comes that we can no longer deny it. This is a very strong write. Great job!
