A shell of armor engaged 24 hours a day. Deflectors raised, periphery examined. The ultimate defense mechanism is not to realize you have raised one. To force the reality of melancholy so deep into the realms of subconscious, under the blanket of your mind, past the watchdog of your soul so your eyes share none of what is truly boiling inside you. A façade of flesh and bone barely clinging on while the fire burns as blue as the sky augmenting the blood which slows from the intense heat.

Smiles adorn the on-lookers and passers-by and they are reciprocated, as to avoiding detection. The words coming out of your mouth are surely not the words your mind delivers to the tip of your tongue. The voices grow louder. An argument ensues in your head, unknown combatants, unknown desires, but lucid expression. You try to reason but how does a puppet reason with its master? The strings are internal, no visual evidence of dismay.

Even the ones closest to you suspect nothing. A bad day perhaps…perhaps.

For the first time since its inception so long ago, there is an indication you haven’t been alone. Someone there all the time watching, listening, directing. The fog from your eyes begins to dissipate. The fire still burns but painlessly and with the desire you’ve been waiting for your whole life.
