Is really quite renowned.
It tells the story of a pair,
And of their love unbound.

The man, so young, then just a boy,
So eager to was to grow.
Came to the maid with cherry hair,
And skin as pail as snow.

Now the courtship they held secret,
For both were set to wed.
But in the night they came to be,
Within each other’s bed.

So on they lived their secret life,
Embroidered in their lie.
And to each other made this pledge,
To be or then to die.

The days they passed within their dream,
And all was heavens bliss.
Till on the day the maid would wed,
And seal it with a kiss.

So on the eve of that foul deed,
The boy came to her side.
Then on his knees he pledged his love,
And begged that she would ride.

She thought on words she knew were right,
Then cast them all away.
And told him with her teary eyes,
She’d ride with him this day.

So in the night they stole away,
No messages were left.
The boy knew he could not return,
Now guilty of this theft.

So on they rode for days on end,
Until they were the lost.
And settled in to farm the land,
Regretting not the cost.

And fortune it did shine on them,
Their lives were more than blessed.
But ever watchful they did see,
That soon it would be messed.

For on the morning of their day,
Came riders from the east.
With searching eyes they found them there,
Then sitting at their feast.

They took the girl and bound the boy,
And beat him to the ground.
But though they tried to kill him then,
His heart it still did pound.

So on the morn they started back,
With both the dead in tow.
Though still alive in chains and gags,
The end they soon would know.

And as the miles passed away,
They spoke though they were mute.
For in their eyes the words came forth,
Their strength and now their root.

Now on the day of their return,
Their fathers they did come.
But now they held no love for them,
And tallied up the sum.

The father of the boy did rage,
“Discrace is what you’ve brought.”
The father of the girl spat out,
“Was this what I had taught?”

And then they left the pair of beasts,
To set their souls aflame.
For in the rhealm of godly love,
No on will bear such blame.

Then came the morning of their death,
And to the gallows went.
But in their eyes there was a smile,
For all the love they’d spent.

When asked for last and final words,
They spoke this simple rhyme.
Thank god for all the love we shared,
A heartbeat lost in time.
