"THE WYOMING JACKALOPE"

When I was a child, they were numerous.
Not seeing one, doesn't take away from their realness.
The Wyoming Jackalope the rarest animal in North America.
Strange little fellow defies classification with drama.

Without his antelope horns, he might be a large Jack Rabbit.
Chocolate color, with horns, and shaped with an antelope's butt.
I've never heard tell it's a vicious animal in any way!
I do know that coyotes have a fine respect for their horns and stay away!

I had one as small child, but finally had to let it go.
It had his horns cut off, but back they would grow.
He was always getting them caught in the wire fence.
They eat a lot of food, so there was much food expense.

An odd trait of the Jackalope is that he can imitate a human's voice.
Cowboys singing to their herd at night were startled to hear them rejoice.
Their lonesome melodies repeated faithfully from the hillside.
Phantom echoes from the throat of some Jackalope with pride!!!

It's been said that they only sing on dark nights
And this is just before a big thunderstorm ignites.
I've heard tell, some get together and sing a soprano cry.
When they allowed hunters the Jackalope is now almost extinct!

Please take time to scoll down

They are rare, but I have seen a couple in Texas too. The truckers mostly see them out in the wide open prairies in West Texas. Cunning little critters! Those horns get pretty big here in the state of Texas (as do most things in the telling), lol! Love this poem.

Smiles,
Rita

Travelled to your site to meet this phantastic Jackalope. Paid richly off.
Simply delightful. Hard to believe a thing like this really exists.. The butt and the antlers, --incredible!. Have seen a lot of be-antlered game, but never something like this.
Enjoyed it sooooo much Con Sue
Thanks for composing and posting this hilarious poem. Sometimes we need to get something that makes laugh.. I DO!
lOVE AND PEACE
