Sit and talk for hours over times past
While you look straight through me
Those moments have gone for you
Not even places in your memory
Cruelly stolen by this disease

With the other lost souls you sit
Staring at walls, barely talking
Prisoners of your own minds
Each day a new day
To relearn the present and bury the past

Some thread of thought, some spark still exists
You proudly announce your army rank and number
Though you don't recall what you ate for lunch
Do you really know me ?
Or do I merely remind you who I am ?

As a child I admired you
My uncle made me laugh and smile
The circle turns
Now I watch you as a child
Like I once was, barely able to dress and feed myself

To those who judge
Do not be hasty or harsh
I am only guilty of remembering
Recalling what he does not

The gardens he tended with their winding steep paths
By the white house in the shadow of grey cliffs
Where foaming waters swirled beneath

This is the image of the man I wish to see
But he is gone for good
Sadly just a shell
My uncle replaced by a man who haunts me
A journey crawling but lingering to the end
