Blood still flows in those streets of carnage,
Yet a new President has been recently appointed.
Amid the gunfire and chaos…he has the awesome task,
Of establishing a democracy…with this burden he is anointed.

The smell of violent death…the acrid cordite stench,
Wafts through the suburbs and dusty downtown lanes.
Amid the screams of the wounded and rebellion’s fury,
The people struggle to hear what he proclaims.

Such an agenda…has he any hope at all?
To unite such a turbulent and divided nation.
With so many tribes and factions and violent militias,
To introduce peace and order…hope or forlorn aberration?

No one would envy this man’s seemingly impossible role,
To bring democracy…to this land of violence and the gun.
A complete debacle of chaos…and social disunity,
Will it be a reality…or fade as a setting desert sun?

One has to gasp at the sheer enormity of the task,
Every fibre of the nation…up from the ashes to be transformed.
Infrastructure as well as a beleaguered and fearful population,
To be rebuilt…restructured…and in unity conformed.

Few could espouse any words of great confidence,
Yet a proud and determined people no one would doubt.
In the course of time they could surprise many skeptics,
And as a young democracy…they could indeed stand out.

Yet many enormous hurdles have to be negotiated,
Not the least of which is uniting a historically divided land.
A land where the automatic weapon is worn as jewelry,
And ‘agendas’ are as plentiful as the swirling desert sand.
