A clash of iron, plastic, chrome
It united the nation, as one great power
And everyone drew close hour by hour

As airplanes struck and buildings fell
We turned our country from a living hell
Into a world of lasting peace and great accord
Every creed and religion acceptance we’d afford

I saw a bright light replace the darkness
I saw those once divided now made free
I saw a change with amazing starkness
And yet complex, America was now the we

Then time went on, lives went back to normality
We had no time for religious and political formality
We forgot the times we shared and the lives lost
We no longer sat back to count the cost

I saw a nation once again grow grim
I saw the lights go back to dim
I saw people divide once more
I saw us forget what it was all for

Shouts of unity no longer rang clear
We no longer stayed true because of fear
The fear and the wonder, the respect and the pride
Became once again an idea simply cast aside

Will it take another attack for America to awake
To stand up on its feet and disunity break
To come together and fight the fight
Of those who died, we’ve put them out of sight

An America who forgets its past
Is one that can never last
Only through remembrance can we go on
And become as one, even more strong

I have several problems with your poem.

"As airplanes struck and buildings fell
We turned our country from a living hell
Into a world of lasting peace and great accord
Every creed and religion acceptance we’d afford"

America was NOT a living hell in the Clinton years. That term applies to countries like Sudan, not the US. Besides, America already paid lip service to freedom of religion and freedom of speech years before 9/11. If anything, America because less tolerant after the Patriot Act was passed.

"I saw a nation once again grow grim
I saw the lights go back to dim
I saw people divide once more
I saw us forget what it was all for"

Questioning the War on Iraq is NOT a bad thing. If anything, Americans should be encouraged to question the actions of their leaders, if only to keep them from abusing their power.

"Will it take another attack for America to awake
To stand up on its feet and disunity break
To come together and fight the fight
Of those who died, we’ve put them out of sight"

Over 800 American troops have died in Iraq so far. It would be an insult to their memories just to dismiss their deaths as meaningless statistics.

To instal an evil bastard so you guys could have a dictator that would trade with you guys

I dont know whats worse, a communist state that doesnt do as democracy says
- or a dictator that commits genocide after genocide, but trades wiv ya

Wake up you fools!

Excuse me, but I didn't have anything to do with that. I was 6 years old at the time.

Besides that, you sound like 9/11 was a good thing. What kind of psycho are you?

Alright, let's get a few things straight. First of all, TheWordChirugeon, you obviously went into this poem with a liberal slant and some sort of vendetta. You interpreting things the worst possible way that you could in order to attack what was written.

"As airplanes struck and buildings fell
We turned our country from a living hell
Into a world of lasting peace and great accord
Every creed and religion acceptance we’d afford"

You assume that this HAS to mean that I'm saying the U.S. was hell under Clinton. But you never stopped to think that maybe I meant it was hell when they struck. The point of this poem was not to knock Clinton or knock Bush or anything of the sort. It is a poem of unity and how important it is/was. If you did not notice a bonding after the 9/11 attacks then you must have been asleep. Obviously the law affords freedom to all religions, but how many people have no bias towards other religions/races? After the attacks the entire country seemed to forget about our petty differences and for once focus on important things like family and patriotism. If you want to start a political discussion find a political site, don't rip apart people's poems. And by the last part saying that it would be an insult to dismiss them as statistics... did you read the poem at all??

Of those who died, we’ve put them out of sight
An America who forgets its past

Hmm... how do you interpret that as they are simply statisics???

this poem is so wrong.Did u not read it after you wrote it?? Our country was not a living hell til AFTER 9/11.Ever since that day life has never went back to normal, that single event changed everything! Before that my friend would be alive, the love of my life wouldnt have came close to death several times came back home and is going to be sent back along with some other friends. Many people's families would not have been broken up because of someones anger. Our country is proud, many people are proud to live in this country for the things we stand for, including Freedom! Bush screwed us over, Clinton wouldve kept things strong. But you obviously havent lost loved ones or feel as though you owe something to this country. After all, the military are the ones protecting our rights and freedom and defending us! Maybe you should realize that before you write a poem!

Just because the poem was about unity does not excuse you for making groundless statements on how America was like before 9/11. It doesn't matter what the poem was supposed to be about, the fact is, you lied in order to fool readers into taking up your point of view

America did NOT become more tolerant after 9/11. If anything, it became less tolerant. "Flying while brown" became a crime, just like "driving while black" was a crime fifty years ago. People of Middle-Eastern descent were subject to baseless searches at airports, for little reason other than the fact that they looked like stereotypical Indian Sikhs were forced to ditch their turbans because they were associated with Al-Quaeda. Hell an 86-year old war veteran was detained at an airport for carrying around a pointy-edged Medal of Honor. That doesn't sound very tolerant to me.

You're a hypocrite if you ignore US troop casaulties yet make a big deal out of the people who died on 9/11. But wait. The dead soldiers were simply statistics. Riiiiiggghhht.
