Drill instructors yelling when to shoot.
Gun held tight in his hands,
A marine being placed in a distant land.

PT every morning, so be ready when you wake,
Pride and honor, with this path you decided to take
Defending our nation, protecting our rights,
A Marine who is brave and ready to fight.

Riots of hundreds storming the towns,
The danger and fear of not knowing when you could get shot down.
Fighting for our freedom, standing up for what you believe is fair,
Questions running through everyone’s minds, “ How much longer will they be there?”

Why send the young ones so far away?
Away to college and see more to life, but to a marine it’s just another day.
They have just barely began to live,
But the choice to serve their country was what they decided to give.

Leaving behind their family and friends,
Never knowing when they will see the end.
Leaving the ones you love with an aching heart,
The agony of not knowing, how long they’ll be apart.

Nerves standing tall on my arms,
Never knowing if your life is in the face of harm.
Always preparing to hear the worse,
Wanting to look back on his recruitment as an awful curse.

The day they sent him off to war,
The day he walked onto the plane with the Marine Core.
He didn’t see me breakdown and cry,
The never ending question, was that our last goodbye?

Your squad will look after you,
You wont know how much I’m going through.
You won’t know how worried I will be,
I will always worry and wonder until you come home to me.

So your love with me I carry,
Trying to think about something other than you, which is rarely.
With me everyday and every night,
Always praying to god that you are alive and doing alright.

Not afraid to fight for his home,
Not afraid to venture off on his own.
Stands tall and proud to be able to say,
He is a US Marine in every way.

So until you get back from overseas,
Until you come back home to me.
Until you get back from that far off, distant land,
My heart, and love will be with you, my wonderful marine man!

Great poem! My brother is one of the few and the proud as of last year. About 2 weeks ago he called back home to tell us that he would be sent to Iraq within the year.....It's nice to know someone out there understands how hard it is to sit at home waiting for news from someone you hold so close...keep up the good work, and good luck with your Devil Dog! Semper Fi!
