Array ( [sid] => 49788 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Forget-Me-Not [time] => 2004-05-31 07:31:23 [hometext] => Alzheimers is such a frightening illness because it attacks our very essence - identity & memory. And not just that of the sufferer. Their loved ones are forgotten, grieving the loss of the validated self (ourselves as reflected back by others)...... [bodytext] => I visited you in the home today,
Brought your favourite flowers bright and gay
Pretty colours, they grow wild in lots,
You used to call them forget-me-nots.

Do you remember me at all? or
Am I just a stranger who comes to call
A nameless face disturbing your sleep,
Or a vague remembrance somewhere deep.

I thought I lost you when we were young,
To men more handsome, brave and strong
But you bound your love and life to me,
And I drank of your vivacity.

I thought I lost you with our first-born,
Your body exhausted, your heart forlorn
But you lived to bear three more girls,
With your green eyes and auburn curls.

God help me I also prayed,
To be the first of us to end our days
With our children married and grown,
I couldn’t bear to be left alone.

But its funny how life can show such spite,
Slowly dimming our inner light
Slipping the moorings one by one,
Till we’re adrift on the currents toward the setting sun.

You just gradually slipped away,
A thought, a memory every day
Until the time when you just weren’t there,
Dispersed like fire smoke on the air.

But I visit you every other day,
With flowers and patience, come what may
Though their bright colours cannot compare
To your green eyes and silver hair.

Postscript…..

I visited your grave this week,
With flowers to comfort you in your sleep
Forget-me-nots, wild and free
Like the love and life you shared with me.

Wow! This is an incredible piece of writing! You've captured the illness so well, with so much emotion. I haven't experienced Alzheimers as directly as you seemed to have but when I saw it, it still really scared me so I can empathise.
'But its funny how life can show such spite,
Slowly dimming our inner light
Slipping the moorings one by one,
Till we’re adrift on the currents toward the setting sun.' .....I love this stanza!
Well done,
dolly xxxx

Oh my god that was one of the saddest poems I have ever read.
My heart goes out to you. I have family members that have Alzheimers and it's so frightening to watch them fade away not knowing where they are. My great grandma is being passed around to stay with each of her children, well not my aunt and unlce, they wont take her.
It's so painful to watch some one forget you and themselfs.
This is a wonderful poem. It made me cry.
