Counting sheep to get away
You chase me through my mind as I run desperately to leave
You cried, you screamed, then you tried to run from me
And yet I can’t hear a word you say
I want you to know, you broke my heart today
Can I take this moment and apologise
Would you tell me what I did wrong?
Can you tell me why you wanted to leave me today?
You were never there all along
I remember when daddy promised, you’d both be by my side
You are the adult, I am the child
I could beg you to stay, tell you I need you
But then maybe I’d be like you, and only deceive you
You’re supposed to protect me, from all the wrong in the world
You were supposed to love me and need me as your little girl
Short of breath, an inch from death
Perhaps it’s all my fault you left
And still here you are by my side, unrecognisable face
Yet through all the pain you still stare at me with disgrace
Can I take this moment and wish you’d come back?
Would you tell me why I weren’t enough?
Can you tell me why you wanted to die today?
And why you could never accept my love?
I remember when I didn’t care, rebellious and wild
But now I am the adult, and you are the child
When will this numbing feeling fall upon my shoulders?
I wish so much I didn’t care
You never were there, you never were there
I wish I was your little baby, so innocent, so mild
But when you finally do become the adult, I refuse to be the child.
