Icy Loneliness
Starting off in seclusion
Ending up there too.
A man is not quite sure
Of what to do.
Never wanting to be lonely,
Always wanting to be loved.
This man believed
He had found his one and only.
Now he wonders
And he ponders,
If this younger face
Has come to take her place.
For although he thought
His first love
Would take loneliness away,
Loneliness intensified every day.
Could this new face take it away?
If he stayed with her always
Would loneliness leave?
Could she be the key?
Alas he will never know,
For he must take her away.
Back loneliness came that day,
When he knew he had to take her away
But no,
Loneliness could not take over.
That icy loneliness
Could not come back.
So he planned and plotted.
But in the end,
Loneliness took over,
His icy loneliness took over anyway.
A spontaneous idea came to them,
In the midst of his plotted scheme.
Though wonderful at the time,
In the end they would have to pay.
Now everything has changed.
She has, he has,
His first love for the better,
His second for the worst.
Even though, in the end,
Both would always be there,
So would the loneliness
The icy loneliness

You wrote another one for Ethan Frome (novel title)? I liked the one in free verse better. I think you should stick with the one you called "Icy Snow" |
