But you do.
Because you’re fifteen and there is a sign
That says seventy percent off and
You’ve got some singles in your pocket.
Enough even, to buy a soda at the food court.
Your presence there is irritating
Disturbing the moms with their little kids
You talk, excitedly, about things that don’t
Mean anything.
Everything is twice as big as it should be
Louder than it has to be – and
Less important than you know.

February eleventh is a hell of a time to buy a calendar
So you don’t.
Because you’re not a kid anymore and you know
It’s only on sale because no one wants it and
You’d rather have the singles in your pocket.
Save them for a bite at the food court.
Your presence there goes unnoticed
Watching the moms with their little kids
You think, peacefully, about the things that
Mean the most.
Everything twice as big as it used to be
Quieter than it once was – and
More important than you know.

February eleventh is a hell of a time to buy a calendar
Yet you do.
Because you don’t remember January anyway and no one
Wants the singles in your pocket when you go.
Have another dinner at the food court.
Your presence there is common
Envying the moms with their little kids
You reflect, gently, back to the things that now
Mean everything.
Everything twice as big as you imagined
Louder, quieter, and then silent – and
Ever important that you know.

A good reminiscing poem. I like the way you emphasize the date in your verse. Top marks for a good write.

Interesting. This held me spellbound right to the end. I can relate to those times alone in the mall. Well done.

Oh that I could have caught but a portion of any missed inspiration as this FELL out. Perhaps the circle turns more slowly at times, but turn it does and it always does so with occaisioned repetition. DejaVu is certainly not an accident. Here we find ourselves again, different circumstances, different decisions, different results ... and still time moves on.
I ramble ... but hope I make sense.

A Brilliant write here, I especially like how the time passes in each stanza-verse-type-thingys, and how it shows the changes. Very nicely done.

Take Care

Very interesting. We were talking about time and then I pick this one to read a day later. I really like the way you show how the person grows in this and I love the way your poems hold the readers interest from the first word to the last.

Very nicely done; never boring, Snem.

Take care,

Tim

Sorry, I should have said never disappointed in your writing. Boring has sort of a negative connotation to it.

I like the way you have followed the stream of consciousness from puberty to adulthood. It's interesting how our age and experience affects our decision making process while experiencing the same set of circumstances. Nicely done!

Hi Snem,

I'm trawling back catalogues, not leaving out Januarys.

I think I was more scared by the progress of a life through a mall then the aging character and their direct experience of life's lessons! As I get older, I want to grow old in the context of a library, or an art gallery... (yes I'm freaking out that I spend too much time in malls).

A potent reflection on the inevitablilty of maturatation, and on the things that matter.

Spike
