We were soldiers…we fought and died,
We fought not for flag…but for the men at our side.
We lived through hell…so many of us lost,
We did our job well…yet so high was the cost.

We were soldiers…we obeyed the command,
We fought the war…that so few understand.
We had no parades…when we that survived came home,
We killed so many…thoughts we have to deal with alone.

We were soldiers…history of us will testify,
We were men…on that battlefield we learned to cry.
We watched over…our brothers so broken,
We have their memories…forever a treasured token.

We were soldiers…and God help us…so young,
We now have a hymn…and still cry when it is sung.
We know the faces…of those we miss so much,
We reflect and know…to their spirits we clutch.

We were soldiers…decades on we still feel the pain,
We left our blood on those foreign fields to stain.
We now are ageing…yet in us the experience will live,
We answered the call…gave all we could give.

We were soldiers…of us our comrades will testify,
We can with esteem…look each other in the eye.
We were soldiers…we heard the screams in the night,
We were friends…no matter be they black or white.

We were soldiers…never left a comrade behind,
We to a man…of war can say little that is kind.
We are proud of the fact…that we took care of each other,
We were bonded in battle…every man was a brother.

Inspired by, and based on, the film “We Were Soldiers…I have always thought that nothing good came from war…this film has gone a long way to changing my opinion!

I have never experienced combat, nor do i ever intend to! but i can appreciate the feelings of comradship and loyalty that must be felt by the soldiers, for those who survive i should imagine they end up witha lot of friends for life. This was an excellent read very well written.
