You watch as she slowly comes into view,
Wandering down that same path you just left.
Is she someone, somehow connected to you?

Stepping in puddles just as you had done,
Same muddied skirt, hem dragging on the ground.
Unaware of danger, though too often slipping,
Tearing at trailing vine and briar all around.

You wave a warning, too distant to be seen,
So like you in her stumbling, aimless gait,
Crying out as she trips in all those well known places
Echoes remembered pain as you stop and wait.

Threads in a repeating pattern draw you close.
As you greet her with a weak comforting smile.
A tapestry interwoven of shared regret.
Bind you to that wan, sad self not seen in a while.

So, no new lessons have been learned it seems,
Same failures, footprints worn down a familiar path.
Bloodied again, but groping on, misted by tears.
If it weren’t so hopeless, even surely you would laugh.

I know we both hoped to meet another self this time,
One wiser, maybe, than we thought she’d be,
But despite our journeys we are just the same as ever.
Nothing changes for the likes of you and me.
