That child who had no way of knowing,
That even had she proved she loved you so,
She still could not have stopped you going.

Tell her that you are not angry or sad,
That at your grave she didn’t shed a tear.
Know it was a small girl’s anger not lack of love,
Release her from that still tormenting fear.

Say you know she didn’t hate you like she said,
Punished and sent to her room in shame.
Too much sorrow she bore that day,
And so many years more that blame.

But how she could ever have known,
That her actions in that time of pain,
Could so resonate throughout her days,
To repeat them all again and again.

Every one since she has tried to love,
Echoes that same loss in her heart.
Revives the feeling her love will fail,
To be good enough from the very start.

In tears and blood she has sought to atone,
Bent every way to mould and fit and please,
Re-inventing herself till she knows not who she is,
Still trying hard those demons to appease.

Just one sign from you is what she craves,
Something final that will let her know,
Time and penance has assuaged the deed,
She has paid the fine and now can be let go.
